RESTORE THE DOOR

Truly, truly. Behind this door is history.

And it's amazing.

The weathered front door of the Granville Historical Society museum building.

The “Front Door” of the Alexandrian Bank Building, home to the Granville Historical Society, opens to a world of stories, pictures, and artifacts from earlier years. Theresa Overholser, our archivist, tells us that the door came to us from the little “salt box” type house built on the Christopher Stark farm in the 1820s. Handmade of butternut wood, it is mortised clear through the stiles and wood pins. The lock was once used on a warehouse door along the Ohio Canal, just across from the Licking County jail, and was gifted to us by George E. Horton. As you can see, the passage of time and weather shows. It's time to bring it back to life.

Together, let's Restore the Door
before the snow falls.

Our door to Granville's history is tired, worn by winds, rains, and time. An urgent project is to Restore the Door door before the snow falls. We need your help.

An expert in restoration tells us we need $1,550 to properly restore our front door. A gift of any amount will help. We will appreciate your generosity.

Here's what a restoration expert recommends: the door needs to be removed and sanded to bare wood. Any repairs are made. The door is then re-stained and coated with epoxy for protection and sprayed with six coats of high quality ultra violet protection marine varnish. Finally it is rubbed with beeswax. The original hardware is cleaned, polished and sealed. Our door to Granville history will be ready for many more years of visitors.
