An archeological dig in Licking County at the site of a possible Hopewell Native American hamlet is one of the programs on Saturday, March 4, at the Region 6 meeting of the Ohio Local History Alliance.
The Licking County Historical Society and the Heisey Glass Museum in Newark are hosting the meeting on Saturday, March 4, in the Society’s Buckingham Meeting House and in the glass museum. Region six includes Licking, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Knox, Madison, Perry, Pickaway, and Union counties.
The meeting will feature four programs, including, at 1:15 p.m.: “A Home on the Bluff: Investigations at Site 33LI1740, A Possible Hopewell Hamlet in Licking County” with Andy R. Sewell, RPA, Lawton & Associates, Inc. The site is located along Raccoon Creek at the Cherry Valley Road intersection of Thornwood Drive, where a dig has been in progress prior to extension of Thornwood Drive over the creek and turning south to Thornwood Drive.
The morning session at 9:45 will be titled “In the Company of Heroes: Collecting Veteran’s History at the Licking County Library” with Doug Stout.
Other programs are:
“STEPS to Success: A Resource for Local History Organizations” with Callie Howard and Alex Corpuz, Ohio History Service Corps at 2:15 p.m.; and
“Tour of the National Heisey Glass Museum and Sherwood-Davidson House at 3 p.m.
Lunch will be held at 11:45 a.m. in the Buckingham House.
Registration for the entire day is $30 for OLHA members and $35 for non-members. Registration may take place on the day of the event, starting at 9 a.m., or register online by Feb. 24, where a complete schedule of events can be found.
The National Heisey Glass Museum is located at the corner of 6th and Church streets in downtown Newark, and the Buckingham Meeting House is two buildings north. The main entrance to the museum is on the east side of the building in Veterans Park.
Parking is free and available in Veterans Park lot at the corner of 6th and Church streets.
