On Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 7-8 pm, the Granville Township Trustees and the Granville Historical Society invite the public to take a guided stroll through Granville history. The historic and beautiful Maple Grove Cemetery has long been “home” to the various leaders, historical figures and characters who helped shape our community.
Sponsored by the Granville Township Trustees and the Granville Historical Society, the tour will point out the headstones of famous Granvilleans and other interesting bits of Granville history.
Township Trustee Kevin Bennett, who has mapped out the tour, said that Maple Grove has historic figures and stories as interesting as those in the village’s pioneer cemetery, the Old Colony Burying Ground.
Among the stories will be the arrival of a family stone marker — a large boulder — brought to the cemetery by 20 teams of oxen, the Granvillean who served with Gen. George Custer’s fated 7th Cavalry and survived, a prominent scientist who was a classmate of Albert Einstein at the University of Zurich, and a former slave who ventured north to Granville after gaining freedom to make a new life.
The tour will last approximately 45 minutes. Those interested in attending should gather at the main gate of the cemetery, located at the end of East Maple Street. Parking is available on East Maple and in the cemetery, to be directed by township staff. Luminaria will be set out to light the pathway, which will be the cemetery roadways. Light refreshments will be available. Free of charge, donations to support the Historical Society always welcomed!
The Granville Historical Society will also have its books and publications available for purchase in the sexton’s building, including its series of eight “pocket histories” that are quick reads on aspects of local history.
WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: 350 E Maple St, Granville, OH 43023 (the Maple Grove entrance on East Maple Street)
THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
